Franklin Stubbs hit a grand slam homer in the first game and John Patton pitched a three-hitter in the second as Virginia Tech swept Howard, 15-2 and 5-1, in Blacksburg. Stubbs' 12th homer this season highlighted Tech's seven-run second inning in the opener. The Hokies are 33-6 and ranked No. 12 nationally. Howard is 10-19.
In Hanover, N.H., Navy beat Dartmouth, 14-6, in the first game of an Eastern League doubleheader behind the hitting of catcher Terry Deitz and designated hitter Andy Ponseigo. The second game was called after five innings, because of darkness, with the score 7-7.
At Catholic, Hans Zeigler struck out 15 Mount St. Mary's batters in the first game as the Cardinals won, 18-0 and 5-4.
At Harrisonburg, Va., Jeff Kidd was two for three with three runs batted in and hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning as James Madison beat George Mason, 13-10.
At Georgia Tech, Don Gee and Richard O'Brien pitched a four-hitter in the first game and Chuck Dunn drove in two runs with a single and double in the second to sweep an ACC doubleheader from Maryland, 3-2 and 5-4.
