Carl Lewis ran the fastest 100 meters of the year and Kelly Cathey set an American women's record in the 10,000 meters at the Mount San Antonio College (Calif.) Relays.

Lewis, the University of Houston star running out of Santa Monica, Calif., was clocked in 10.09. Second was Innocent Egbunike of Azusa Pacific in 10.35.

Cathey, of the University of Oklahoma, established an American record in the women's 10,000 with a time of 32:22.5, bettering by half a minute the record of 32:52.5 set in 1980 by Mary Shea of Raleigh, N.C.

In later events, Sammy Koskei of Southern Methodist and Kenya won the 800 meters in 1:45.26 for a stadium and meet record; Larry Myricks jumped 27-6, equaling the best mark in the world this year, for a stadium and meet record; Sam Turner won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.31, the best time in the world this year, with Greg Foster second in the same time; Mark Fricker of Oregon State won the 1,500 meters in a meet-record 3:38.94, and Dan Ripley won the pole vault at 18-5, his personal best outdoors and a stadium and meet record. Ripley missed in three attempts at the 18-9 American record.

In the women's discus, Holland's Ria Stalman won with a throw of 218-5, the best mark in the world this year.
