Mike Quade's suicide squeeze bunt scored Pete Rowe with the winning run in the eighth inning and Wilfrido Cordoba struck out four of the five batters he faced in relief as the Alexandria Dukes defeated the Kinston Blue Jays, 7-6, last night at Four Mile Run Park.
Rowe led off the eighth with a double off the center field wall. After an out, Rowe advanced to third on Marvin Clack's infield single. With Rowe running, Quade laid down a perfect bunt in front of the plate and Blue Jay catcher Bill Pinkham had no choice but to throw to first to get Quade as Rowe scored.
Cordoba struck out the side in the ninth to earn his third win in four decisions. Cordoba relieved Angel Barez after Kinston tied the score with two runs in the eighth. With runners on second and third, Cordoba forced Beni Perez to pop to Rowe and struck out pinch-hitter Jim Wahlig to end the threat.
Nick Castenada was the batting star for the Dukes. His two-run homer in the first tied the score at 2. He drove in a run in the third with a groundout and another in the seventh with a single, which gave the Dukes a 6-4 lead.
