Rick Siriano's two-run ninth-inning single completed a three-run Durham rally and the Bulls held on to defeat the Alexandria Dukes, 6-5, yesterday at Four Mile Run Park. The Bulls beat Alexandria for the fifth time in seven games this season.
With Durham down, 4-3, Mike Garcia got things started in the ninth. Alexandria second baseman Rick Renteria misplayed Garcia's ground ball, Freddie Tiburcio followed with a single and Tommy Thompson walked to the load the bases with one out. Bob Tumpane walked, forcing in Garcia to tie the game. Siriano followed with a single to right center to give Durham a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Marvin Clack led off with a single. After a forceout at second, Joe Orsulak's single (his fifth hit of the day) put runners at first and third. One out later Ken Ford singled to right to drive home a run and Orsulak advanced to third. But Brad Garnett's high pop-up to Durham second baseman Garcia ended the game.
The Dukes had taken a 4-3 lead with three runs in the fifth. Pete Rowe and Andy Snaith singled and Clack walked to load the bases with one out. Mike Quade followed with an RBI single and Orsulak drove in two runs with a single to right.
Jeff Twitty was the winning pitcher, giving up six hits and one earned run in four innings. Wilfrido Cordoba was the loser.
