Chris Green held the Salem Redbirds to five hits and struck out nine batters in six innings and the Alexandria Dukes scored four runs in the fourth inning to win the first game of a Carolina League doubleheader, 4-1, last night at Four Mile Run Park.

Salem routed the Dukes, 9-1, in the second game to win its first after 11 straight losses to Alexandria this season.

Green (8-1) allowed only a second-inning run on Joe Wood's double in the opener. Green has struck out 72 batters in 78 1/3 innings.

Rick Renteria led off the fourth with a single and went to third on Nick Castaneda's line-drive double to left. After Brad Garnett lined to first, Benny de laRosa chopped a grounder to second baseman Steve Garcia, who threw home. Renteria's slide jarred the ball loose from catcher Raymie Styons and the score was tied, 1-1. Jim Felt followed with a bloop single to left, scoring Castaneda. Burk Goldthorn lined a two-run double to right-center to close out the scoring.

In the second game, Salem scored four runs in each of the third and fourth innings to back the two-hit pitching of Mike McClain.
