Pinch hitter Jerry White's two-out two-run pinch double keyed a four-run Montreal eighth inning as the Chicago bullpen failed to hold a 2-1 lead for Ferguson Jenkins in Wrigley Field.

Checked on seven hits and six strikeouts through seven innings before Jenkins left for a pinch hitter, Montreal got to Willie Hernandez (2-5) with a single by Andre Dawson. Al Oliver doubled, Dawson taking third. Bill Campbell relieved Hernandez. Gary Carter's sacrifice fly tied the score. Warren Cromartie was intentionally walked and Tim Wallach grounded out, the runners moving to second and third.

White, batting for winning reliever Ray Burris (3-8), looped a double to right field to score Oliver and Cromartie. Chris Speier's single scored White.

White's game-winning hit came on a 3-2 pitch. "With first base open," he said, "I was looking for a breaking pitch. He (Campbell) surprised me with a fast ball. I fought it off and got the hit."

Chicago had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Bill Gullickson on Ryne Sandberg's single and Leon Durham's eighth home run.The Expos got a run back in the fourth; Dawson singled, stole second and scored on Carter's double to left.

The Cubs mounted a threat in the ninth against Woodie Fryman as Larry Bowa's double put runners on second and third with two out. Jeff Reardon came on for his 11th save by striking out pinch hitter Keith Moreland.
