Ellis Valentine's three-run homer during a five-run fourth helped beat San Diego in New York.

Valentine, playing center field for the first time since 1976 because of an injury to Mookie Wilson, hit his sixth homer this season after George Foster singled off starter John Curtis (6-5) and Dave Kingman reached base on Curtis' error. Joel Youngblood doubled in two runs that inning. Kingman had hit his 21st homer in the second.

Trailing, 8-4, the Padres scored three runs off reliever Neil Allen in the eighth, one on pinch hitter Terry Kennedy's single and two on Gene Richards' fifth hit of the game, a single. Terry Leach finished for New York, retiring all four hitters he faced, to earn his second save.

Astros 4, Cardinals 2: Jose Cruz's two-run homer with none out in the bottom of the ninth beat St. Louis.

Knight led off the Houston ninth with a single off Bob Forsch (8-5) and Denny Walling ran for him. Cruz homered on the next pitch.

Joe Niekro (8-6) held the Cardinals to four hits over the last seven innings, striking out two in his sixth complete game of the season.
