Rolf Benirschke kicked three field goals, Dan Fouts passed 18 yards to Scott Fitzkee for a touchdown and Chuck Muncie ran 10 yards to score as the San Diego Chargers rolled to a 23-3 victory over the turnover-plagued Denver Broncos today.
With a light rain falling most of the game, the Broncos had six turnovers, four in San Diego's half of the field. Fullback Rick Parros fumbled into the end zone after the Broncos had reached the Chargers' three-yard line with 5:28 left in the game.
The Broncos fumbled on their first play from scrimmage, helping set up Benirschke's first field goal, a 50-yarder with 8:10 left in the first quarter. Denver countered early in the second quarter on Rich Karlis' 40-yard field goal, but San Diego drove 71 yards later in the period, Benirschke kicking a 24-yard field goal to give his team a 6-3 halftime lead.
Benirschke's third field goal, a 40-yarder, followed an interception of Craig Morton' pass by safety Bob Gregor on the fifth play of the third quarter.
Safety Andre Young's interception thwarted a Denver drive at the Charger 12 later that period and San Diego marched 88 yards for its first touchdown, Fouts passing to Fitzkee.
Denver had several injuries, the most serious being free safety Steve Foley's broken right arm.
