Rob McClanahan scored two goals and assisted on another to lead visiting New York to its first victory of the season.

McClanahan gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 14:31 of the first period when he took a pass from Andre Dore and flipped a backhander past goalie Michel Dion. Pittsburgh tied the score less than three minutes later on a goal by Steve Gatzos.

Ulf Nilsson scored at 10:45 of the final period, taking a pass from McClanahan and firing a wrist shot past Dion to give New York a 4-1 lead. Pittsburgh came back with two goals in less than two minutes to make it 4-3 before Mikko Leinonen put the game away for the Rangers with a score at 16:25.

Randy Carlyle scored a power-play goal for Pittsburgh and Greg Malone got his first of the year for the Penguins.
