Mike Bossy's two goals within two minutes of the third period gave the New York Islanders a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers tonight after the Islanders had trailed, 3-0.
Bossy tied the score, 3-3, with a power-play goal by beating Ranger goalie Ed Mio from the left face-off circle at 11:28 of the final period. He scored the winning goal, his fifth of the season, off assists from Bryan Trottier and Bob Bourne at 13:20.
The Islanders also got second-period goals from Bourne and John Tonelli after the Rangers had gone in front, 3-0, on a Mark Pavelich score early in the second period.
Bourne's first goal of the season came off assists from Tomas Jonsson and Bossy at 13:48 of the second. With four seconds left in the period, Tonelli pulled the Islanders to within 3-2. Cutting across the crease, Tonelli took Wayne Merrick's pass, deked Mio and scored from the left.
Ranger captain Barry Beck skated off the ice with 2:12 remaining after injuring his right knee, skating into the boards with the Islanders Stefan Persson.
The Islanders played without captain Denis Potvin, who was involved in a minor traffic accident earlier in the day.
In a statement released by the Islanders before the game, the team said Potvin was involved in a "vehicular accident" on his way to a team practice at Cantiague Park near Hicksville, N.Y.
Potvin, who has helped the Islanders to three consecutive Stanley Cup championships, was examined by Dr. George Gilbert Jr., according to the team.
The Islanders said Potvin should be able to return to action for Thursday night's home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
