Wayne Peace passed for 289 yards and three touchdowns as the Gators, after trailing, 14-7, in the first period, finished with their highest score in 13 years.
A Florida Field homecoming crowd of 72,885 watched as the Gators, scoring on their first 10 possessions, finished with the most points since a 59-34 victory over Houston in 1969. Florida's greatest margin came in a 144-0 victory over Florida Southern in 1913. The loss wasn't the worst for West Texas State; it lost, 99-0, to New Mexico Military in 1917.
Peace completed 15 of 17 passes before leaving the game at halftime.
"Sitting out (the second half) was great. It gave me the chance to kick back and be a fan for a while," said Peace. His coach, Charley Pell, had a different perspective: "I don't particularly get any thrill out of a score like that."
Lorenzo Hampton scored three touchdowns, including an 86-yarder, and John L. Williams (19 carries, 188 yards) scored from 76 yards out for the Gators (4-2), who finished with a school record 783 yards total offense.
West Texas State (1-5) recovered two onside kicks in the first quarter that led to touchdowns.
