H.D. Woodson's Eugene Singletary defeated Spingarn's Stuart Dawkins, the Interhigh's top runner, for the first time this season in the East-West cross country championships at Fort Dupont Park yesterday.
Singletary's time of 17:29 in the East Division was the fastest of the meet. Dawkins finished third in the East in 17:51, one second behind Woodson's Nathan Strickland. H.D. Woodson won the East title with 17 points, 30 points better than Spingarn. Ballou was third with 68 points.
Coolidge's Charles Randolph and Kelvin Washington finished one-two in the West to give the Colts the victory with 31 points. Randolph finished in 17:59, four seconds ahead of Washington. Dunbar's Maurice Sanders was third in 18:05.
Jeryl Fitch of Coolidge had the fastest girls time in 16:52 to help the Colts win the West championship. Janine Cumberlander of Coolidge was second in 17:37. Katherine Greider finished third for Wilson in 17:55.
Dunbar finished in the first four places to rout Spingarn for the East girls championship. Endora Adams had the second-fastest overall girls time of 17:03 to win the individual East title. Dunbar finished with 16 points to Spingarn's 46.
