Minnesota center Neal Broten scored two of his team's four power-play goals in the first period at Los Angeles.

Defenseman Brad Maxwell started the rout when his 60-foot shot got past goalie Gary Laskoski. Minnesota then scored on four straight power plays and held a 5-0 lead at the end of the first 20 minutes.

Bobby Smith made it 2-0 when he connected at 5:10. Thirty-nine seconds later, Broten made it 3-0. Gord Roberts and Broten's second goal of the night finished Laskoski, who was pulled at the start of the second period in favor of Mario Lesard.

The Kings got into difficulty when defenseman Jay Wells was penalized five minutes for fighting and was handed a match penalty for head-butting with Minnesota's Willi Plett.

The North Stars made it 6-0 at 15:53 of the second period when Brian Bellows scored on a 25-footer. The Kings got their first goal against goalie Gilles Meloche when Jim Fox scored off a scramble in front of the net with 1:38 to play in the second period.

The Kings got goals by Billy Sykes and Ulf Isaksson in the third period to close to 6-3, but Al McAdams and Plett scored in the final minutes to put Minnesota ahead, 8-3.
