Middleweight Irish Mike Baker will stake more than a win or a loss against David Carter when he steps into the ring for the 10-round main event at the Crystal City Hyatt Regency tonight at 8.
The card also includes a closed-circuit telecast of the heavyweight championship fight between Larry Holmes and Tex Cobb in Houston.
In the Regency's main event, a victory by Baker (49-15-1), of Arlington, would earn him promise of an Atlantic City matchup with Mustafa Hamsho. Standing in his way is Carter (8-2), a 160-pounder from Weston, W.Va., who has won four of his last five bouts.
A six-round contest pits middleweight David Todt of Suitland against Derrick Doughty of Somerville, S.C. Todt has won all four of his professional fights by early knockouts. Another six-rounder will be between lightweight Darryl Tyson (2-0) of the District and Edward Carberry, a former Golden Gloves champion making his professional debut.
Maurice Saalakan (5-3-3) of the District fights Ira Robinson (6-4) of Richmond in a six-round lightweight bout, and Mike James (7-1) of District Heights will fight Warren Freeman (3-0) of the District in a six-round welterweight contest.
