N.C. State's football coach, Monte Kiffin, has quit, amid reports the school wasn't going to extend his contract anyway. A day earlier Kiffin (6-5, 4-7, 6-5 in three-year stand) said, "All I'm asking is one more year." And now: "Quite honestly, the support I received from the athletic department was insufficient for my needs and the needs of the football team. I could not find assurance from the athletic director (Willis Casey) that support will be forthcoming in the future" . . .
George Washington's president, Lloyd Elliott, meeting the press with new Athletic Director Steve Bilsky, says broadening GW's athletic program is "an objective in the immediate years ahead." No elaboration; Bilsky said he might have in mind full-time coaches for more sports, and greater exposure in terms of promotions and television.
