Guard Steve Burtt's 22-foot jump shot from the top of the key with one second to play gave host Iona a 65-63 victory over American University in tonight's championship game of the fifth annual Manufacters Hanover Classic.

Marist defeated Baltimore Loyola, 81-65, in the consolation.

American's Fernando Aunon made the first of two foul shots with six seconds left to tie the game at 63. Aunon was handed the ball for his second free throw and teammate Juan Jones moved from his designated spot on the left side of the lane. The violation prevented Aunon from shooting his second foul shot. Iona took possession under its basket, Burtt dribbled over midcourt and made his long shot to win the game. American is 3-1, Iona 4-1.

The Eagles' leading scorer, senior guard Ed Sloane, did not play. He aggravated a groin injury in the first half of Friday night's game against Marist.

The first half was close, with American taking the lead, 38-37, on Mark Nickens' 12-foot shot at the buzzer.

In the second half, American moved to a 52-48 lead with 10:29 remaining. Iona went ahead, 61-60, on Tony Hargraves' follow-up shot with 3:28 remaining.

Twenty-six seconds later, Gordon Austin scored on a 22-foot jump shot to give the Eagles a 62-61 lead. Chris Crockett's corner jumper with 1:17 left put Iona ahead, 63-62, and Aunon was fouled in the act of shooting while trying to tip in guard Steve Nesmith's missed shot with six seconds left.

Nickens led American with 23 points. Iona's Burtt, the tournament's most valuable player, finished with 28 points. Austin and Nickens were named to the all-tournament team.
