The new field house at George Mason University is making the Fairfax County facility a mecca for indoor track.
Last week, there were 1,650 participants in an all-comers high school meet and all-comers college meet for men and women. In the men's events, George Mason freshman John Parker ran the 300 meters in 34.1 seconds, equaling the best collegiate time of last indoor season.
Seventeen more indoor meets are scheduled at George Mason this season. There are bleacher seats for 1,200, plus standing room.
Sondra Norrell-Thomas, associate athletic director at Howard University, has been nominated to the NCAA Council, the policy-making arm of the NCAA... Craig Littlepage, the new basketball coach at the University of Pennsylvania, says that he would like to begin a home-and-homd series with George Washington. The Penn schedule is complete the next two years, said Littlepage, a former Penn teammate of Steve Bilsky, GW's athletic director-designate.
Mike Shannon, forward on the George Mason basketball team who has not played this season because of academic ineligibility, will regain his eligibility Jan. 4, the day after the Patriots play Duke. He will have missed nine games... Penn's defeat of Villanova last week ranks as one of the major upsets of the young season. What was even more surprising, however, was that Penn showed better overall team quickness than Villanova, the preseason No. 1 pick in the Big East Conference.

Three proposals on the agenda at the NCAA convention next month could, if passed, cause major implications for some area basketball teams.
One rule, proposed by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, would allow offcampus recruiting only by staff members of the institution, thereby eliminating alumni and booster contacts. For schools such as American, GW and Howard, with limited recruiting budgets, initial in-person contacts frequently are made by alumni, not coaches.
Two other proposals would limit teams to either 15 or 16 home games. Maryland has 17 home games scheduled this season. This proposal, initiated by Chicago Loyola and others, is known as the Notre Dame Rule, because the Irish have 20 games in South Bend, Ind., this season
