Philip Brown's 16-footer with five seconds remaining gave Virginia Union a 66-64 victory tonight over the District of Columbia tonight at Arthur Ashe Center.
The Firebirds (5-2) lost their opportunity to go into overtime when Panther Darryl Christian intercepted a pass from UDC's Weaver Blondin to Michael Britt with three seconds left to secure Virginia Union's win.
The Firebirds led, 37-33, at the half with Earl Jones scoring 15 points before intermission. UDC, however, could not build more than a five-point advantage in the second half and when Charles Oakley scored on a layup with four minutes left in the game Virginia Union claimed a 53-51 lead.
The teams traded leads the rest of the way, neither getting more than a two-point edge. Jones' basket, off a rebound, gave the Firebirds their last tie, 64-64, with less than 30 seconds remaining.
The Panthers (7-1) were led by Brown's 17 points, Oakley's 14 and Irvin Carter's 10. Oakley also had 18 rebounds as the Panthers outrebounded the Firebirds, 43-38.
Jones led all scorers with 22 points for UDC. Britt had 15 points and Greg Carson had 10. Jones also had 14 rebounds.
