Ken Hayes, Oral Roberts University basketball coach, confirmed that he had been fired Saturday night, shortly after his Titans lost to archrival Tulsa, 63-56, in the finals of the Oil Capital Classic.

Hayes, who took ORU to the National Invitation Tournament last year, reportedly will be replaced for the interim by Assistant Coach Dick Acres. ORU players said they will boycott all practices and games until Hayes is reinstated, senior center Chris Cantrell said.

The Titans are 3-5, including victories over Southern California and Creighton. Three of the losses came after junior standout Jeff Acres, whose father is the assistant coach, suffered knee problems and had to be redshirted . . .

A bench-clearing brawl caused Italy to quit the final game of an annual NATO basketball tournament, giving the title to the U.S. team by forfeit after only 1 minute 13 seconds of play in Casteau, Belgium. The score was tied at 2.

At 1:13, some rough contact between U.S. guard Shelby Brown and Italy's Fabio Colombo at the Italian end of the court, erupted into a fight that cleared both benches. Brown and Colombo were ejected. After order was restored, the Italian team, winner of the 1981 tournament, walked off the court, giving the title to the United States . . .

Quintin Dailey, a rookie guard with the Chicago Bulls, will return to the team today after a 12-day leave of absence for psychiatric care.
