Bill Foster, the South Carolina basketball coach who underwent quadruple coronary bypass surgery Dec. 15, expects to be home Wednesday and to go shopping Christmas Eve, his wife said. Foster has been hospitalized since Dec. 11 when he suffered what was described as a "moderate" heart attack during the Gamecocks' 59-53 upset victory over then 15th-ranked Purdue . . .
In a regular meeting with about 500 faculty members, Clemson University President Bill Atchley defended his efforts to reorganize the school athletic department after the NCAA imposed a two-year probation for football recruiting violations.
"Some think the only answer is to hang somebody in effigy to get some blood," Atchley said. "But there are more equitable answers."
A group of Clemson professors representing the American Association of University Professors sent a letter to Atchley a week ago demanding that he fire those in the athletic department responsible for the violations.
