Walter Payton became the fourth ball carrier to surpass 10,000 yards rushing in an NFL career and Vince Ferragamo had the league's second most prolific passing game, 509 yards, today as Payton and the Chicago Bears defeated Ferragamo and the Los Angeles Rams, 34-26.

Payton had 104 yards rushing -- including his first touchdown of 1982 -- and 102 yards receiving.

Payton has 10,095 yards in his eight-year career. He trails Jim Brown (12,312), O.J. Simpson (11,236) and Franco Harris (10,823).

Payton hadn't scored a touchdown this season until today, when he ran two yards for a score in the first period to put the Bears ahead, 17-0. Payton also had five receptions for 102 yards against Los Angeles.

McMahon completed 18 passes in 28 attempts for 280 yards and two touchdowns. His 11-yard throw to Emery Moorehead in the opening period put the Bears ahead to stay.

Ferragamo hit only one of his first seven passes, with two interceptions, before finally catching fire. He hit George Farmer with a 38-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and Wendell Tyler with a 7-yard scoring throw in the second as the half ended with the Bears ahead, 20-16.

Ferragamo, completing 30 passes in 46 attempts, brought the Rams within 27-26 before McMahon found Ken Margerum with a 10-yard scoring pass with 4:58 to play.

Norm Van Brocklin passed for 554 yards for the Rams against the New York Yankees in 1951. The only other 500-yard game was by Y.A. Tittle of the New York Giants, 505, against the Redskins in 1962.
