George Washington's spread offense came undone and Iona's Steve Burtt scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in the final 10 minutes as the Gaels overcame a 13-point second-half deficit to win, 65-57, last night in a semifinal game of the Shawmut Worcester County Classic in Massachusetts.
Holy Cross beat Davidson, 65-62, in the second game on the first night of basketball at the new Centrum. GW (4-3) will play Davidson in today's consolation at 6. The title game will be at 8.
The Colonials, who led, 40-27, after Darryl Webster and Mike Brown (17 points) scored to open the second half, saw their lead disappear as they tried to protect it with a spread. The Gaels (7-1) outscored GW, 20-8, and trailed, 47-41, with 11:35 to go.
With Iona's pressure defense forcing mistakes, Burtt, a guard averaging 22 points a game, scored six straight points in the next 84 seconds as Iona tied the game at 47.
GW could have taken a big lead in the first half, but the Colonials made only two of their first 11 free throws. For the game, GW, normally a 68 percent shooting team from the line, made only seven of 22 foul shots (31 percent). The Colonials didn't do much better from the field, shooting 37 percent.
