he University of the District of Columbia, behind the scoring of forwards Michael Britt and Kenny Payne, defeated persistent Gannon, 60-58, and won the Porreco Cup Tournament tonight.
UDC (10-2) jumped off to a 9-2 lead as Payne and guard Greg Carson each scored four points in the first four minutes. Gannon (6-4) went ahead, 17-16, midway through the first half as guard Goose Pryor scored six points during a 15-7 spurt. Gannon was able to hold off the Firebirds the rest of the half and led, 32-29, at intermission.
Less than two minutes into the next half, Payne, who had 12 points, made a steal and drove for a layup to tie the score at 35. Britt then scored eight of his 23 points and 10 of the Firebirds' next 10 to put his team ahead, 45-35, with 14:31 left.
Gannon closed to a point on two jumpers by forward Butch Warner with less than a minute left. Gannon was forced to foul on every possession, the Firebirds succeeded in getting only one of four bonus opportunities at the foul line, but that free throw, by Earl Jones, gave UDC its margin of victory.
Jones and Britt were named to the all-tournament team and Britt was voted the tournament's MVP.
In the consolation game, Bloomburg State defeated Monmouth, 62-60.
