Carling Bassett of Toronto played steadily to wear down Kim Shaefer of Alexandria, 6-3, 6-4, yesterday in the final round of the Virginia Slims of Washington qualifying tournament at the McLean Racquet Club.

"That's all she does--hit the ball back," said Shaefer.

Early in the first set, it looked as if Shaefer, 25, might be too strong for Bassett. But the former Marshall High student said she made "way too many (unforced) errors" trying to place her shots, and she lost the last four games of the set and the first four of the second set.

Bassett, 15, fresh from winning the Orange Bowl world junior last week, advanced to the main draw of the tournament and will play 38th-ranked Alycia Moulton in Tuesday's first match at GW.

Peanut Louie beat Vicki Nelson, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, coming back from from love-40 at 2-2 in the second set to win that game and gain control.

Louie will face Katherina Skronska, who beat Beth North, 6-4, 6-1. Because of Leslie Allen's withdrawal, Nelson, ranked 65th, also made it to the main draw. Nelson will play Dianne Fromholtz.

Anna Maria Fernandez, who defeated Kim Sands, 7-5, 6-4, will face Hana Mandlikova.
