James Wilder ran 47 yards to the Chicago 13-yard line on Tampa Bay's first offensive play in overtime today and Buccaneers Coach John McKay said he never considered trying to move the ball any closer.

"He who messes around in field goal position lives to regret it," McKay quipped after Bill Capece kicked a 33-yard field goal 3:14 into the extra period to give Tampa Bay a 26-23 victory over the Bears and a berth in the NFL playoffs.

Capece also kicked a 40-yarder to force the overtime session with 26 seconds left in regulation.

His game winner came two plays after Wilder, who had carried only once in regulation, took a pitch from quarterback Doug Williams and went around right end. The second-year fullback sprinted untouched until Bears cornerback Terry Schmidt pulled him down at the 13.

The Bears, who led by 17 points midway through the third quarter, finished with a 3-6 record.

Tampa Bay, 5-4, rallied from a 23-6 deficit with the passing of Williams, who had touchdown passes of 35 and 31 yards to tight end Jimmie Giles to pull the Buccaneers to within three points with 8:03 left. Chicago 3 17 3 0 0 23 Tampa Bay 0 6 7 10 3 26
