The mystery over the future of San Francisco 49ers Coach Bill Walsh continued to grow yesterday as Walsh met with team owner Edward DeBartolo Jr. amid rumors he was thinking of resigning.

The 1982 NFL champions stumbled to a 3-6 record this season, and Walsh reportedly hasn't been seen by players, assistant coaches or reporters since shortly after a 21-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams Sunday.

DeBartolo reportedly wants Walsh to remain as head coach-general manager. The team owner could not be reached at his Youngstown, Ohio, office.

Walsh is thinking of resigning as coach to concentrate on his duties as team general manager, a Walsh family member told the Oakland Tribune on Wednesday.

John McVay, the team's administrative vice president, has given assistant coaches permission to negotiate with other teams . . .

Dallas quarterback Danny White jammed his right thumb in practice yesterday and will not practice with the Cowboys today, a team official said.

White's throwing hand will be X-rayed and doctors will determine if he will be able to play in Sunday's NFL playoff game with with Tampa Bay, said Cowboys spokesman Greg Aiello. Aiello said the team doctor didn't think anything was broken in White's thumb, "which means he should be able to play."
