Mike O'Reilly and Troy Webster each made two foul shots in the final seconds to enable George Washington University to hold off Columbia, 65-60, in the foul-plagued consolation game of the Juice Bowl tournament tonight.
Sixty fouls were called. GW (6-5) made 31 of 45 foul shots and Columbia (2-8) 22 of 31. Florida Southern beat Hofstra, 75-74, in the title game.
Dan Sullivan gave GW a 59-53 lead with 3:45 remaining when he made a three-point play. GW appeared to have the game in hand when Chester Wood made two foul shots for a 61-53 lead with 2:35 remaining.
But Columbia closed to 61-58 at 1:42 when Eric Clark made five straight points. Then O'Reilly and Webster each made two foul shots as GW pulled out of danger. The Colonials made their last seven points from the foul line.
The Lions led, 5-0, after the first 2 1/2 minutes but GW scored 11 straight points, five by game-high scorer Mike Brown (17 points). The Colonials led at intermission, 32-25. Brown was named to the all tournament team.
The Colonials led by nine in the second half but when Brown fouled out at 5:18 and Columbia's Tom Brecht made the ensuing two foul shots, the Lions were back in the game at 56-53.
