Bernard Perry and Derek Carraciolo scored four points apiece in overtime to give Howard a 69-66 victory over South Carolina State tonight in an MEAC game at the Smith-Hammond-Middletown Memorial Center.

Howard, which had not won on the road this season, is 1-1 in the conference and 5-4 overall. South Carolina State is 0-2, 4-5.

Perry opened the overtime scoring with a jumper at 4:27, and Carraciolo closed it with a layup with 21 seconds remaining to clinch it.

The Bison capitalized on 10 Bulldog turnovers in the first eight minutes and led through most of the first half. Perry's 10-foot jumper with 15:58 remaining gave Howard a 10-9 advantage, and the senior guard scored four points in the last two minutes for a 34-30 halftime lead.

Perry scored eight points in the first 11 minutes of the second half, but Howard could not build up a substantial lead. Kirk Collier scored on a three-point play at 8:48 to give South Carolina a 51-49 lead.

The Bison held Bulldog guard Marvin Haynes, the nation's sixth-leading scorer with a 23.5 average, to seven points.
