Rookie defenseman Phil Housley collected his first hat trick and Tony McKegney snapped a tie midway through the third period in Buffalo to defeat Winnipeg.

McKegney, who also had three assists, took defenseman Mike Ramsey's lead pass and skated in to send a 35-footer past Jets rookie goaltender Brian Hayward at 10:35 of the final period to give Buffalo a 3-2 advantage.

Housley, who leads all rookie defensemen in scoring with 11 goals and 39 points, scored all his goals on power plays. His scoring also has been a good-luck charm for the Sabres, who are 7-0-2 in games in which he has scored.

Housley took Dave Andreychuk's pass to tie the game at 17:15 of the first period and then gave the Sabres a 2-1 lead when he fooled Brian Hayward at 9:24 of the second period with a nifty backhand move. Housley got his third goal of the game at 17:27 of the final period.

Thomas Steen had given Winnipeg a 1-0 lead in the first period when he beat Buffalo goaltender Jacques Cloutier at 11:46. The Jets' Dale Hawerchuk connected during a power play at 14:49 of the second to tie the game, 2-2.
