Forward Alex English, named this week to start on the Western Division All-Star team, scored 36 points to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 126-112 victory over the Hawks last night in Atlanta.

The victory came one night after Denver had lost, 135-128, to Houston, then tied for the worst record in the league. That game in turn came one night after Houston had lost by 53 to Chicago.

"We really wanted to win this one after last night in Houston," said English, the league's leading scorer.

Said his coach, Doug Moe: "It was a tough win for us after getting beat by Houston last night. It's hard to predict what this team will do each night. We've been playing better, but have had few wins lately."

Denver held a 110-108 lead with 5:16 remaining, then scored 14 straight points to lead by 16 with 1:12 to play.

The victory was Denver's first in three road games. Atlanta lost its third in four games.

Kiki Vandeweghe finished with 30 points and Dan Issel had 25 for Denver. Dan Roundfield led Atlanta with 29 points and Eddie Johnson had 23 points and 10 assists.
