Jimmy Connors ousted Peter McNamara, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5, after Jose Higueras, the sub for Bjorn Borg, beat Gene Mayer in the semis of the $250,000 Molson Challenge in Toronto; final today. Higueras chased down Mayer's two-handed forehand and backhand shots and patiently allowed him to squander critical points. Result: 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 7-6 (14-12). Connors and McNamara almost walked off in their third set after hassling with officials, and drawing crowd reaction, over line calls.

In Richmond, Guillermo Vilas defeated Kevin Curren, 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, and Steve Denton turned back Eliot Teltscher, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, to reach today's 2 p.m. match for the $100,000 top prize in the $300,000 United Virginia Bank Classic.

In the Denton-Teltscher tie breaker, Teltscher became upset over a line call putting him down, 7-6, and Denton closed out the set. Thereupon, Teltscher made a finger gesture to the linesman; booed, Teltscher gesticulated similarly to the crowd. He was fined $500 by tournament referee Zeno Pfau.

Angered by a call in the third game of the second set, Teltscher put forth little effort the rest of the match. Teltscher stood almost motionless on Denton's serve, making no effort to hit the ball on the last nine of Denton's 13 aces in the set.
