Dan Ruland's turnaround jumper from the lane with 1:11 left gave James Madison a 46-44 victory over American tonight. The Eagles missed four shots in the final minute that would have tied or won the game.
Ruland's basket gave the Dukes a 45-44 lead. The Eagles held the ball, called a timeout with 35 seconds left, then missed two shots at the basket.
Ruland got the rebound and the Dukes' Jimmy Masloff was fouled with seven seconds left. He made one free throw, missed the second and the Eagles got two more shots at the basket; both missed. Masloff took the last rebound as the clock ran out.
The Dukes (13-9) were down, 42-37, with 4:48 left but outscored the Eagles (13-9), 9-2, the rest of the way, Ruland and Derek Steele scoring four points each in the run.
Ruland totaled 17 points and six rebounds and Steele 10 points for the Dukes, who led only once in the first half before the Eagles scored the last six points for a 21-16 lead.
The Eagles were led by Gordon Austin with 14 points, 12 in the second half; Mark Nickens with 11 and Ed Sloane with eight.
