Henry Sanchez of Virginia Military edged Reggie Henderson of George Mason to win the 500 meters and VMI won the team title in the Virginia Intercollegiate men's indoor track championships yesterday at George Mason.

Sanchez's time of 1:01.38 and Henderson's 1:01.42 may have bettered the U.S. record, but confirmation by the NCAA could not be obtained. Both qualified for the NCAA meet.

VMI won seven events and the team title with 138 points, followed by Virginia 134, George Mason 116 1/2, Virginia Tech 74, William and Mary 46, James Madison 37 1/2 and Richmond 12.

George Mason's Mike Scudieri won the long and triple jumps. His 51-foot-10 triple jump qualified him for the NCAA.

Other winners for George Mason were Tom Pascoe in the shot put and John Parker in the 55 meters.

Villanova won both the men's and women's titles in the Big East indoor championships at Syracuse's Carrier Dome. The Georgetown men were ninth and the GU women seventh.

Brian McNelis of Georgetown was second in the 800 meters in 1:52.3. Georgetown's two-mile relay team finished second in 7:40.28.
