John Pinone made a 17-foot jump shot with one second remaining in overtime yesterday to give No. 7 Villanova a 71-70 Big East Conference victory over No. 8 St. John's.

With the score tied at 69, St. John's Chris Mullin made one of two foul shots with seven seconds left. Pinone got the rebound of the missed foul shot, passed to Stewart Granger and, once downcourt, took a return pass just inside the foul circle. Pinone shot over Mullin and, as the ball fell cleanly through, the crowd of 17,583 at Philadelphia's Spectrum began a wild celebration.

Villanova (21-4 overall) clinched a tie for the Big East regular-season title with a 12-2 record. St. John's is 23-4 and 11-4.

The Wildcats took a 63-60 lead 72 seconds into overtime, but the Redmen scored the next seven points--four by Kevin Williams and a three-point play by Mullin--to take a 67-63 lead with 2:56 remaining.

Two foul shots by Williams restored St. John's four-point margin at 1:52, but Granger made two foul shots and Dwayne McClain a driving layup to tie it at 69 with 31 seconds left. The Redmen held the ball for the last shot and McClain fouled Mullin in the act of shooting.

Granger led Villanova with 18 points, Ed Pinckney had 16 and Pinone 15. Mullin led all scorers with 24.
