Terry Gannon and Dereck Whittenburg scored 25 points each and Thurl Bailey had 23 as North Carolina State routed Wake Forest, 130-89, yesterday in an Atlantic Coast Conference game.
The Wolfpack tied its fourth-highest scoring total and set a school record for an ACC game, beating the record set in a 121-100 victory over the Demon Deacons in 1966.
The 130 points were also the most in the conference this year and the 41-point margin was the league's greatest this season.
"The entire year has been somewhat of a frustration, and a lot of pent-up emotions," N.C. State Coach Jim Valvano said. "I don't want anyone to think we were running the score up. We got on a roll and things just kept going."
State led at the half, 56-46, and Bailey ended all doubt at the start of the second period, scoring the Wolfpack's first eight points of the period as it went on to lead by as many as 43 points, 129-86, in the final minute.
State (17-10, 8-6) also had 18 points from Sidney Lowe.
The result allowed Maryland to gain the No. 3 seeding for the ACC tournament this week in Atlanta.
Wake Forest (17-10, 7-7) was led by Dulaney Rudd with 22 points.
