Lacrosse: Bill Cantelli and Gary Benninghoff scored three goals each as Johns Hopkins beat visiting Harvard, 11-3.

The game remained scoreless for nearly nine minutes until John Krumenacker scored on an extra-man play for the Blue Jays with 6:15 remaining. Cantelli added the second goal for Hopkins (3-0) with 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter on an extra-man play with an assist by Bill Dressel.

Hopkins broke loose in the second quarter with two goals by Benninghoff, two more by John Stahl and one each by Peter Scott and Cantelli.

It was Harvard's opener.

In Charlottesville, Scott Gerham controlled two faceoffs and assisted on two goals as Virginia rallied from a 3-1 deficit with three goals in a 22-second span of the second quarter and went on to a 10-7 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County.

The spurt gave the Cavaliers (2-0) a 4-3 lead and they added two goals in the third period for a 6-3 margin. UMBC (1-2) closed one time to within a goal but never got closer.

Gerham and Bill Wyker scored three goals each for Virginia and Gerham added two assists. Brian Rogers had two goals for the Cavaliers.

UMBC was led by David Baldwin with two goals and two assists.

At Syracuse, Orange midfielder Brad Kotz scored three of his game-high five goals during a seven-goal spurt at the start of the third quarter, helping Syracuse (3-0) over Navy, 17-9. Navy has lost two straight after an opening victory.
