Dan Veatch said he was a little tired during the men's 200-yard backstroke final, but the Churchill High School senior won anyway, leading the Rockville Montgomery Swim Club to the team title of the Region II Short Course championship meet yesterday at White Oak.
Michelle Griglione, 13, of the Northern Virginia Fun and Fitness Club, continued to dominate women's events. She won the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.35) and was second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.01).
"Tonight I was a little slow," said Veatch, who also swam the second leg of the third-place freestyle relay team. "I swam 100 yards backstroke trial before the meet."
Rockville Montgomery amassed 2,319.5 points, winning the regional championship for the fifth consecutive year. The Solotar Swim Team, which led after the first two nights of competition, placed second with 2,205. Northern Virginia Fun and Fitness was third with 1,662.
Although Veatch's winning time (1:54.93) wasn't good enough to qualify for the senior nationals, he had already qualified in the same event two weeks ago. Earlier in the evening he missed the national cut by .3 in the 100-yard backstroke.
"Another week's work and I think I can get it down," Veatch said. "We're doing a lot of sprint work in practice this week."
For the weekend, 100 Potomac Valley records fell.
