Dino Ciccarelli scored at 8:05 of overtime in Toronto to send Minnesota into the Norris Division final series. First-year man Brian Bellows had tied it for the Stars from a net-front scramble with 22 seconds left in regulation.
The North Stars came from behind three times in the third period in winning their second overtime game of the 3-1 series and advancing to meet Chicago.
Ciccarelli ended it with a wrist shot from 12 feet past goalie Mike Palmateer, who had made an initial stop on Curt Giles.
Ciccarelli said that in the dressing room after regulation the North Stars "tried to visualize what it would be like to score the winner, but all I could do was see something flukish like a puck glancing off somebody's skate. As it turned out . . . Curt shot and the puck seemed to drop out of midair toward me. I sort of trapped it with my legs and as it hit the ice, I shot."
Rick Vaive, a 51-goal scorer shut out in the first three games, made two third-period goals for Toronto, including a go-ahead score with 2:47 left, a 12-footer past goaltender Don Beaupre. Bill Derlago scored two earlier Toronto goals. Bobby Smith got his fourth of the series for Minnesota.
