Alexandria right-hander Art Ray came into last night's Carolina League game at Four Mile Run Park with a 0.00 ERA, but neither he nor the five relief pitchers who followed could stop Peninsula from scoring an 11-1 victory over the Dukes.
Alexandria batters struck out 10 times (30 times in the last three games) and managed just five hits.
The Dukes started and ended quickly against left-hander John Machin (1-1). Roberto Bonilla's first-inning hit fell between the Peninsula right fielder and second baseman, and the Dukes' top hitter, Jim Opie, followed with a line drive to center for a run-scoring triple.
Peninsula came back in the second as JoJo Jones homered, scoring Alan LeBoeuf and Richard Schu to make it 3-1.
In the fourth, Ray (1-1) saved a run by picking Schu off first just before Jones tripled. Jones scored on Joe Cippolloni's sinking liner.
It became 5-1 in the fifth as Jim Olander walked, stole second and scored on errors by Marvin Clack and Sam Khalifa. Errors by Clack and Rubin Rodrigues allowed Jones to score in the sixth and it was 6-1.
Peninsula, aided by the Dukes' fifth error, scored again in the seventh, then reliever Scott Borland gave up six singles without retiring a batter in the eighth and it was 11-1.
