Gar-Field's Roger Bennett set a meet record with a triple jump of 52 feet 3 inches and was named outstanding male field athlete in the fourth annual George Mason Invitational track meet yesterday.
"I feel pretty good about the record," said Bennett, the top-ranked high school jumper in the nation. "This is only my second meet of the year because I have been training hard. I didn't really know how things were going to happen but I was sure I could do it."
The Gar-Field girls team finished with 70 points in topping South Lakes' 53 for that title. This was the first George Mason meet in which girls competed.
In the boys division, T.C. Williams won with 79 points, to 58 for Gar-Field.
Calvin Holmes of Denbigh High in Newport News set a meet record in the 110-meter hurdles (14.0). Pat Mann of Gar-Field set a meet record in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (53.6) and Ronald Coleman of Denbigh set a meet record in the 400-meter run (46.9). Coleman, who also won the 200-meter run, was named the outstanding male runner.
Ellen Fox of McLean was named the outstanding female in field competition. Teresa Saab of Denbigh was selected the outstanding girl runner.
