Top-seeded Martina Navratilova fought off gusting winds and a second-set surge to defeat Andrea Jaeger, 6-1, 7-5, yesterday for her fourth title in the $200,000 United Airlines Tournament of Champions.
It was Navratilova's 36th consecutive victory on the WTA tour and her 33rd this year.
Navratilova, who won $50,000, picked up yesterday where she left off when rain delayed the final Saturday night in Haines City, Fla.
"I didn't miss anything," Navratilova said. "It wasn't like she was playing that bad. I was just hitting winners all over the place."
Billie Jean King and Anne Smith teamed to beat Navratilova and Pam Shriver for the doubles title, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (11-9). It was the first loss the Navratilova-Shriver team has suffered this year . . .
In Las Vegas, Jimmy Connors beat Mark Edmondson, 7-6, 6-1, in a wind-swept match to win an unprecedented fourth victory in the $312,500 King Tennis Classic and the 97th tournament of his career.
Connors, who holds the record for most career tournament victories, won $62,500.
In Bournemouth, England, top-seeded Jose Higueras won a four-hour, rain-delayed final from Tomas Smid, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5, in a $150,000 Grand Prix tournament.
