Kiki Vandeweghe scored 37 points and Mike Evans came off the bench to add a career-high 23 as host Denver defeated San Antonio to stay alive in their Western Conference semifinal playoff series.

San Antonio now leads the best-of-seven series, 3-1. Game 5 is scheduled Wednesday night in San Antonio.

Denver, hitting medium-range jumpers while San Antonio was uncharacteristically cold from the outside, dominated the first half. Evans hit three jumpers as the Nuggets ran off 10 straight points to move to a 26-14 lead with 4:53 left in the opening quarter.

Evans, who played only half of the quarter, scored 13 points and Denver held a 40-29 edge at the end of the period.

San Antonio pulled within six, with Gene Banks scoring five of seven straight Spurs' points, early in the second quarter. But the Spurs then went cold again, failing to score over a four-minute span, while Denver scored 14 straight to take a commanding 22-point lead, 66-44, with 1:53 left in the half. Denver led, 72-50, at the intermission.

Alex English, the league's leading scorer, scored 19 points for the winners; Dan Issel had 16.

Johnny Moore led the Spurs with 27 points, followed by Banks with 24 and George Garvin with 21.
