Rockville's Tom Rafferty pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 batters to lead the Rams (13-4) past Northwood (13-5), 14-4, in a Maryland Region I baseball semifinal yesterday at Rockville. The Rams play the winner of today's Richard Montgomery-Wheaton game for the region title Wednesday.
Rockville's Mike Pugliese had three hits in four trips, including an RBI triple. Rafferty also went three for four and knocked in a run. Tim Stanley was three for three, driving in two runs with a fourth-inning single and another on a single in the fifth.
Rockville led, 6-0, in the first inning and then added four runs each in the fourth and fifth.
John Strittmatter hit two triples and scored two runs for Springbrook in its 4-3 victory over High Point in the Maryland AA Region II baseball at Springbrook.
Strittmatter got his second triple in the sixth, and scored the go-ahead run on Pat McGugan's single. Springbrook (16-1) got three-hit pitching from Tyler Wolfram, who gave up all of the High Point (9-7) runs in the third. Springbrook will be host Friday to the winner of today's Parkdale-Churchill game.
Wet field conditions caused the postponement of seven high school playoff games scheduled for yesterday. All four games in the AAA Northern Virginia playoffs will be played today. And both Maryland AA Region II games will be played today.
Senior designated hitter Jan Alexander knocked in five runs with three singles and center fielder Ann Cedar drove in four more on four hits to lead Oxon Hill to a 19-10 victory over Eleanor Roosevelt in a Prince George's County softball semifinal at Prince George's Community College.
Oxon Hill (10-9) faces the winner of the Crossland-Northwestern game, for the county title Wednesday at PGCC at 4 p.m. Junior Tresa Marshall (9-6) pitched a 10-hitter for the winning Clippers.
