Mark Alwin, the new head professional at Frederick's Eaglehead Country Club, will defend his Maryland Open title, Monday through Wednesday at Suburban, near Baltimore. Other top pros entered are Gary Marlowe, Fred Funk, Fred Gibson, Jan Miller, Brian Staveley, Wheeler Stewart, Rick Hughes and Mark Helffrich. Marty West of Columbia Country Club, who won his seventh Maryland Amateur last month, heads the amateurs.

Alexandra Reinhardt and Linda Hunt, first to tee off in last Sunday's final round of the Peter Jackson Classic, set an LPGA record for fastest 18 holes played when they cruised the Montreal course in 2 hours 15 minutes 6 seconds. That was considerably faster than the last nine holes played by the final Kemper Open threesome of winner Fred Couples, T.C. Chen and Scott Simpson . . .

LPGA great Carol Mann will open preliminaries for the Bobby Bowers Junior tournament with a free clinic today at 1 p.m. at Springfield Golf and Country Club. Any donations will benefit the Bowers Memorial Scholarship Fund. A full field of 256 boys and girls from all over the nation is entered for the event, which will run Monday through Thursday . . . Defending champion Calvin Peete, and Hal Sutton and Lanny Wadkins, one-two on the PGA money list, are committed to play in the Anheuser-Busch Classic at Kingsmill in Williamsburg July 21-24. Qualifying for Middle Atlantic PGA pros for the Anheuser will be Monday at Williamsburg Country Club . . .

Clare Dolan, 16, won her first-round match in the Maryland Women's Amateur against three-time Baltimore champion Andrea Francus, then, four holes down with four remaining against eventual finalist Deirdre Anderson, Dolan rallied and sent the match to extra holes. Anderson's long par putt on the first extra hole kept Dolan from being one of the youngest ever to gain the Maryland final . . .

Left-handers Russ Cochran and Bob Charles won the first two tournaments in the new satellite PGA Tournament Players Series, but neither has a PGA Tour card. There are no left-handers on the Tour, although Jim Nelford, who won last week's TPS Essex International, and Mac O'Grady putt left-handed. Larry Rentz of Lanham and Gary Marlowe of Rockville will play in the TPS Greater Baltimore Open at Hillendale, July 21-24. Middle Atlantic PGA qualifying for the GBO will be Friday July 15 at Hunt Valley. Among pros committed so far are Bob Charles, Gary Player and son Wayne Player, George Archer, Tommy Armour, Bobby Nichols, DeWitt Weaver and Kermit Zarley.
