In Kansas City, Toronto scored three in the 11th inning to win their fourth straight and remain in first by three games in the AL East.
Willie Upshaw opened the 11th with a triple to center field and Jorge Orta walked. Upshaw came home on Lloyd Moseby's single off reliever Keith Creel (0-4), but Orta was out at third on Ernie Whitt's bunt. Moseby scored on Dave Collins' fourth single of the game and Alfredo Griffin drove in Whitt with the third run.
Randy Moffitt (4-0) was the winner after pitching three innings. However, he blew a 4-2 lead in the ninth. Pat Sheridan doubled with one out, went to third on Cesar Geronimo's single and scored on John Wathan's second double of the game. Willie Wilson was walked intentionally to load the bases, and U.L. Washington hit into a force play, driving in the tying run.
George Brett was walked intentionally to reload the bases, but Hal McRae flied out to end the inning.
Gaylord Perry, 44, who was signed last week after Seattle released him, went six innings in his first start for the Royals, yielding eight hits and two runs.
