Ricky Williamson completed six of 10 passes for 68 yards and scored a touchdown to complete a 70-yard drive in Navy's first controlled scrimmage today.

On that drive, Williamson threw 13- and 16-yard passes to tight end Mark Stevens and a 14-yarder to flanker Greg Brand. Freshman Bob Misch completed six of seven passes for 74 yards and had a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tim Kramer.

Coach Gary Tranquill said he was impressed with his team's passing.

"We got a good look at just about everyone we wanted to," said Tranquill, who used more than 100 players, including 37 freshmen, in the two-hour scrimmage, played in 90-degrees-plus weather.

"That was our goal this afternoon," he said. "We want everyone to have a chance. I think we have a long way to go but at least now we can start determining just who is going to help us the most."

At Howard Stadium, tailback Andrew Kelly gained 67 yards in six carries and scored one touchdown yesterday in Howard's first full-contact scrimmage.

Kelly, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound junior, scored from 10 yards out. His longest run was 32 yards, on a draw play.

Mike Holmes (5-10, 215), a former offensive lineman, gained 45 yards in four carries.

Brian Sloan completed two of five passes for 27 yards. Freshman quarterback Kenny Jones, from H.D. Woodson High School, completed all four of his passes for 52 yards. Jones also threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kevin Watkins.

Defensively, Coach Joe Taylor was pleased with the play of linebacker Martin Brown, who led the team in tackles last year; tackle Charles Scott, and end Arnold Tucker.
