Laurel Race Course will open its 75-day meeting today, featuring the $35,000-added Pearl Necklace Stakes for 3-year-old Maryland-bred fillies over seven furlongs.
Quixotic Lady, a gray daughter of Quadratic conditioned by Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens, is the heavy overnight choice. The half-sister to champion Heavenly Cause has earned $217,657. Rollicking Queen, her most serious rival, has won only $39,790.
Jockey Gregg McCarron, who has been riding regularly in New York, will ride Quixotic Lady, while Danny Wright will again be aboard Rollicking Queen, who will be getting five pounds from the highweighted choice at 117.
The Washington, D.C. International will again be the centerpiece of the meeting, flanked by two top-grade events, the Selima Stakes for 2-year-old fillies and the Laurel Futurity.
An innovation this year will be the availability of a racing program that will include listings of past performances of horses racing that day. The regular program will sell for 50 cents and the program with past performances will go for $1.
Post time will be 12:30 p.m. every day of the meeting except for Thanksgiving Day, when the first race will go off at 10:30 a.m.
