Scott Fletcher doubled home Tom Paciorek from second base with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as Chicago won the second game for the sweep of visiting Minnesota. In the opener, Harold Baines ripped an RBI single in the seventh inning to give LaMarr Hoyt a major-league leading 22 victories. It was Hoyt's 11th consecutive victory.
Paciorek began the ninth inning of the second game by drawing a walk from Ron Davis (5-8), the fourth Minnesota pitcher, and took second on Ron Kittle's single. Fletcher's double made a winner of Guy Hoffman (1-0), who got the final out in the top of the inning.
Minnesota had tied it, 6-6, in the ninth on Ray Smith's run-scoring single. That run erased the lead Carlton Fisk had given the Sox in the bottom of eighth with an RBI single.
Baines now has a 17-game hitting streak and Paciorek, who doubled in the seventh, had a 16-game streak.
In the opener, Baines' game-winning hit in the seventh came after pinch hitter Julio Cruz drew a leadoff walk from loser Ken Schrom (13-8). Rudy Law sacrificed him to second and pinch hitter Jerry Hairston drew a walk. Baines then singled for his 20th game-winning RBI of the season, tying him for the American League lead with Dave Winfield of the New York Yankees.
Hoyt (22-10) went the distance for the 11th time, yielding seven hits, striking out four and walking three.
