Dave Christian's goal in the final minute of regulation gave the undefeated Washington Capitals a 3-3 tie with the Hartford Whalers in an exhibition game at Hershey Park Arena tonight. The teams were scoreless in a five-minute overtime.

The Capitals pulled goaltender Pat Riggin with 1 1/2 minutes left in the third period, trailing, 3-2. The faceoff in the Whalers' zone was won by the Capitals' Doug Jarvis, who passed the puck to center Christian, who shot it past goalie Mike Veisor at the 19:16 mark.

Washington opened the scoring midway through the first period when Scott Stevens connected for his second goal of the preseason on a power play. Hartford tied the game at 1 early in the second period when center Ron Francis scored unassisted.

At the 7:34 mark of the third period Hartford went ahead, 2-1, on a goal by Bob Sullivan. Less than two minutes later Washington made it 2-2 as Bengt Gustafsson scored on Washington's second power play. Hartford regained the lead some seven minutes later when Mark Johnson scored unassisted.

The Capitals (5-0-2) play the Pittsburgh Penguins Sunday at the Baltimore Civic Center at 7:30 p.m.
