Quarterback Todd Dodge threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as top-ranked Texas drubbed Rice, 38-13. Dodge suffered a hyperextended right knee in the second period and left the game, but is expected to be ready to play against Oklahoma this Saturday in Dallas.

Virginia tailback Howard Petty gained 114 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns, and fullback Antonio Rice of McKinley Tech in Washington caught two touchdown passes as the Cavaliers rallied from an early 10-0 deficit to defeat Duke, 38-10. It was the fourth victory in a row for the Cavaliers.

Freshman Derek Schmidt kicked a 42-yard field goal on the final play as sixth-ranked Florida State salvaged a 17-17 tie against Memphis State. "I've never been so happy with a tie in my whole life," Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden said.

Ken Karcher passed for 316 yards as Tulane upset No. 19 Vanderbilt, 27-23.

Oregon was knocked from the unbeaten ranks by Arizona as Alfred Jenkins passed for 230 yards in a 28-14 victory. Arizona's Max Zendejas tied an NCAA record by kicking a field goal in 18 straight games.

Undefeated Kentucky won its fourth game as Mark Higgs scored on runs of 76 and 29 yards in a 27-14 victory over Rutgers.

Minnesota ended a 20-game Big Ten losing streak with a 33-24 victory over Indiana.
